Chapter 12

Kristopher

Lydia had been on his radar for months. He hadn’t been sure that he would step forward to find his mate this year, but he knew he would eventually. They all would. She had been his favorite prospect.

It was her art that had attracted him, more than any special sins crying out for punishment. In fact, early on he’d reluctantly dismissed her as a potential mate because most of her mistakes were small and even for Krampus, they were understandable.

Stealing food because you were hungry didn’t carry the same moral weight as stealing things because you wanted them. Vandalizing someone else’s property with beautiful artwork wasn’t exactly the same as breaking things and destroying them.

He didn’t want a terrible person for a mate, but he did need someone with enough sins to sustain him for the first year. She simply didn’t meet the requirements on that issue no matter how much he wanted her.

But he still couldn’t dismiss her from his mind and no one else he considered came close to exciting him the way she did. He’d begun to despair of finding anyone. Would he be the first of the Collective to fail?

And then there had been the fire.

After that everything had changed rapidly. Her sins compounded until her soul was streaked in black marks. In just a short time she’d managed to put herself on the eligible list.

With Krampusnacht only a few days away it was perfect timing, but it didn’t give him long to prepare. He wanted to provide a place for her to thrive and that took thought.

Luckily with his powers and the abilities of his home it was easy enough to create a suitable environment once he made some decisions. He’d seen the hovel she lived in, so he decided to give her rooms fit for a princess.

Rooms any girl would adore—or so he thought. That hadn’t gone quite according to plan. She’d seemed impressed but also intimidated by the luxury.

It was fine; that could be fixed. The art studio though… it would be perfect. She would see that and understand how much effort he’d put into making her happy.

There had been a small hope that she would see that he knew her better. In the kitchen it had bothered him to see them laughing as they cooked breakfast. Nick was so much more in-tune with humans. He’d tailored himself to fit in better.

Kristopher had never made an effort. He felt Krampus was more efficient as a distant, aloof figure and that’s how he’d remained. But now he regretted his lack of social skills. What if it meant she would prefer Nick?

That worried him. And then … her reaction to the art studio had not gone as planned either. Not at all. Instead of happy she’d looked horrified, and he hadn’t understood why at first.

Maybe, just maybe, he was stepping too far out of his role, trying too hard to win her. If she was meant to be their mate it wouldn’t be necessary. If not … he didn’t really want to think about losing her at the end of the year.
